The Mountain East Conference has selected the city of Bridgeport (WV) as the site for its 2015 cross country championships. The championships will be held Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex.
"The Mountain East Conference has enjoyed outstanding support over our first two years of existence with the City of Bridgeport since establishing our headquarters here in 2013," said Commissioner Reid Amos. "In an effort to expand that relationship with the MEC and its members, Bridgeport brought forward a very strong bid that includes an outstanding venue and the commitment of resources that will ultimately enhance the championship. We greatly appreciate that efforts of the City of Bridgeport, the Bridgeport CVB and Genesis Partners for their continuing commitment to the Mountain East."
Officials involved with tourism in Bridgeport were also excited with the news.
"We are very glad to have the MEC choose Bridgeport as its site for the cross country championships," said Greater Bridgeport Convention and Visitors Bureau (GBCVB) President Drew Pomeroy. "We have put an emphasis on sports marketing and to bring in this event is another feather in our cap."
Eleven men's teams and 10 women's teams will compete for the championship in October. Wheeling Jesuit and West Virginia Wesleyan have each won a men's cross country title in the first two years of the MEC, while the Bobcats are two-time defending women's conference champions.
